Drivers need to consider the dimensions of every vehicle before deciding where it belongs on the trailer, particularly when a load includes a combination of sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, or other larger vehicles. 

 

The trailer itself also creates some of the physical demands associated with auto hauling. Auto hauling involves extensive inspection and documentation because the condition of each vehicle matters at both pickup and delivery. Before loading, drivers typically inspect vehicles for existing scratches, dents, chips, or other damage and document what they find. 

 

Photos and digital inspection tools can provide a clear record of a vehicle’s condition before transportation. That documentation can become especially important if there is a question about damage after delivery. 

 

Drivers also inspect their own equipment, including the trailer, hydraulic components, ramps, straps, chains, and other securement devices. A consistent inspection process helps drivers identify problems early instead of discovering them while a vehicle is being loaded or after the truck is already on the road. 

 

Electronic Logging Devices and GPS Technology 

Like drivers throughout the trucking industry, auto haulers use electronic logging devices to record driving time and track hours of service. ELDs help drivers manage available hours while providing the records required for compliance. 

 

GPS and navigation technology are particularly useful for auto haulers because the size and configuration of a loaded car carrier can limit where a truck can safely travel. Low clearances, tight turns, narrow streets, and restricted roads can quickly create problems, especially when delivering vehicles to dealerships or other locations in busy areas.

Work gloves can protect a driver’s hands while handling straps, chains, and trailer components, while slip-resistant footwear provides better traction during loading and unloading. High-visibility clothing can make drivers easier to see around dealerships, terminals, auctions, and other busy locations. Depending on the jobsite and carrier requirements, additional protective equipment may also be necessary. 

 

Weather can make the physical side of the job more challenging. Rain, snow, ice, and extreme temperatures can affect trailer surfaces and securement equipment, so drivers need to adjust how they work when conditions change.
