NFI’s annual Million-Mile awards give the company a chance to thank experienced drivers for their commitment to safety and hear from them about their careers on the road. This year, 30 drivers from across the United States and Ontario were honored at four celebrations, continuing a tradition of recognizing the people whose daily work keeps freight moving for customers throughout NFI’s network.
Four Events to Celebrate This Year’s Drivers
NFI held four recognition events this year across the nation:
- Kansas City, KS
- Frisco/Dallas, TX
- Charlotte, NC
- Bridgewater, NJ
These gatherings gave NFI an opportunity to celebrate its drivers’ accomplishments away from their regular routes. Holding events in four locations also brought the recognition to different parts of the company’s driving community, with honorees working from locations ranging from Ajax, Ontario, to Lubbock, Texas.
The celebrations continued an annual tradition of recognizing experienced drivers and the care they bring to their work. For drivers whose schedules often mean working independently, taking time to acknowledge those contributions matters.
Advice From Experienced Drivers
NFI’s Million-Mile program recognizes drivers who achieve one million miles without a preventable accident. Reaching that milestone takes years of careful driving, sound judgment, and consistent attention to equipment and road conditions.
Steven G., an NFI driver and Million-Mile honoree who has been driving for over 20 years, offered advice that applies both behind the wheel and at a customer’s delivery location: “Always be early, talk to the people at the delivery, and be courteous. Be a team player.”
His advice reflects how much of a driver’s job involves working with other people. Communicating with receiving staff, treating customers respectfully, and cooperating with coworkers all help a driver handle the day’s responsibilities.
Adam B. brings almost 30 years of driving experience to his work, including 10 years with NFI. His advice emphasized taking the profession seriously. “As the great Sage Forman said, ‘Don’t be a dummy.’ In other words, treat the profession as the responsibility it is and not as a privilege you’re owed.”
Experienced drivers know how quickly conditions can change during a trip. Traffic can slow unexpectedly, the weather can affect visibility, and a familiar delivery location can present a new challenge. Equipment inspections, adequate following distance, and knowing when to slow down or stop all contribute to a safe driving record over time.
Finding Support at NFI
Edgar B. joined NFI immediately after driving school and has now been driving for almost 10 years. When asked about his favorite part of working for the company, he pointed to the people around him: “Having great people to work with, I consider them family. They are always there for me and attentive to my needs to keep me safe, happy, and with home time.”
For someone who has spent nearly his entire driving career with NFI, that support is a reason to stay. Edgar credits his coworkers with looking out for him on the job while respecting his need for time at home.
When asked what he wants his legacy to be, Edgar emphasized giving his best and being someone others can count on: “That I’ve always done my best, and that I could be reliable and dependable. I want to complete my career with a safety record as it stands today.”
By celebrating drivers like Edgar, NFI recognizes years of safe driving and dependable service. The annual awards give the company an opportunity to thank these drivers for their work and share their accomplishments with the wider NFI community.
